Memorial Day Weekend: Thoughts for peace

Two thoughts:

One way to change the ch’i energy is with music. So, two videos below. One with the peaceful, joyful energy of friends drumming, and the other with the peaceful, soulful energy of meditation music.

The second video also reminds us of this Memorial Day idea: If we honor those who gave their lives for war, when do we honor those who gave their lives (and time, and energy, and heart and soul) for peace?

Hope you will be attending some Memorial Day events in you neighborhood, and bringing a message of peace and no more war. On Long Island, you can attend the Memorial Day Parade in Bellport*, and be present with the South Country Peace Group.

Preparing for Earth Day: Peace Songs for 4/21/2012

White Coral Bells” is the Peace Song of the Day for April 21st. It is a short, sweet song about Lily of the Valley flowers, often sung as a round.

A riddle: Is it more important for people who want peace, to realize that peace starts with loving the earth? Or, is it more important for people who love the earth, to realize the only way to save the earth is to end the wars and embrace peace?

Probably a riddle that doesn’t need to be solved. Though, it does go to the heart of this website. In caring for peace and justice, Kimberly and Ian were drawn into green activism. Then, while submersed in green activism, we realized that we really wanted a special place set aside for pacifism and peace. Those feelings were part of the vision that became this Peace Couple project.

Because of the interconnectedness of peace work and environmentalism, many of the Peace Songs of the Day are about earth, nature, and the environment. Each song we list also reflects the value of nonviolence.

in Each Time Zone Globally

Via J15global.com: On his birthday and in the spirit of Dr. King’s vision for racial and economic equality, peace, and non-violence, we are holding candlelight vigils to unite our world in a global movement for systemic change.

Wherever we may be, whether in our homes, in city squares, online, Occupies, or at work, we lift a beautiful message high above the political dialogue. We light the dream of a more equitable world in our hearts. We can overcome! Continue reading Sun, Jan 15th: MLK/Occupy Worldwide Vigil for Unity

“Peace Song of the Day” post for 12/29: A song and a message for Spring

The Peace Song of the Day for 12/29 is The Flower Carol. See a video and details at the read more.

I was inspired to think about the hope for Spring today, because of a video message from Reverend Billy Talen. Reverend Billy noted that since Winter Solstice has passed, all of us (including the occupiers) are looking forward with great hope to the arrival of Spring!

Consider a Turkey-Free Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey Free Thanksgiving: Wendy, Matt, and a new friend
A Vegan Thanksgiving Feast held 11/20/2011

Peace Couple is all about shopping in more compassionate ways, and, learning to gradually change your habits to be more just and sustainable. For Thanksgiving, you could move towards a vegetarian or vegan diet, by opting for a Turkey-Free Thanksgiving.

For Thanksgiving 2011, Kimberly and Ian celebrated a Turkey-Free Thanksgiving on Long Island, with their friends from Healthy Planet. There are photos at our Peace Couple Flickr: here.

We also wanted to share some tips about vegetarian or vegan dishes for Thanksgiving.

First of all, you can think out of the box. You do not need a pretend turkey to have a vegetarian Thanksgiving. There are plenty of delicious foods with protein, and plenty of side dishes to conjure up old memories and tradition.

Though, if you feel the need for a turkey-like dish, or, if you are cooking, and you know that your friends and family will expect “a turkey”, then there are suggestions, with ratings in an article at Slate Magazine: here.

Slate used a rating system based on appearance, meatiness, and overall taste. I think it is useful to list the non-turkey options they reviewed. And, their ratings might be especially useful if you are serving to folks who are not vegetarians. Though, I have to say, I disagree a bit on the Slate summary of the “Field Roast Stuffed Celebration Roast” — it is one of my favorite meals. And, it looks pretty good if you rub some oil and spices on it!

List of “alternate turkey” choices from Slate Magazine:

1. Field Roast Stuffed Celebration Roast

2. Quorn Turk’y Roast

3. Tofurky

4. Gardein Protein Stuffed Veggie Turkey Roast
