Merry Christmas: Peace Song of the Day for 12/25/2011

Merry Christmas to all our old friends and new visitors at Peace Couple!

The Peace Song for the day is “Over The River And Through The Woods”. It is based on a Thanksgiving poem, though, is often turned into Christmas music. The song was written by Lydia Maria Child (1802 – 1880) , whom Wikipedia notes:  “…was an American abolitionist, women’s rights activist, opponent of American expansionism, Indian rights activist, novelist, and journalist and Unitarian.”

Getting Together: Peace Song for 12/24/2011 (catch-up)

Lots of songs coming through today…While the Duke and Duchess of Peace share responsibility for Peace Song of the Day, since The Duke currently has the more serious day job, The Duchess is in charge of keeping things up around here. You may have noticed that she (me) missed a few days. Well, here goes…Peace Song announcements for a lot of the days that have passed by too quickly…

The More We Get Together” is the Peace Song of the Day for December 24th . It is a traditional song, popularized by the children’s singer Raffi. It can be found in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 240. Singing this song would be a wonderful way to celebrate the crowd at a demonstration. Or, you could change or add lyrics as the basis for a topical song to make a specific point.

Something Good Has Begun: Peace Song 12/23

The call for peace is so strong and clear in Cat Stevens Peace Train, it makes me want to just jump on board.  This video was filmed during the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize concert for Muhammad Yunus, the founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, which does micro-lending to the poor.  This model for overcoming poverty has been copied around the world.

Sun & water old life givers: Peace Song for 12/21/2011

Happy Solstice! Hope you are feeling in tune with nature. Winter Solstice will occur at 5:30 UTC [12:30am EST] on Thursday, December 22nd. (Late Wednesday night!). Reaching the Winter Solstice point means that the daylight hours will grow longer again. (Today was the shortest “day” of the year. Could you feel it?)

The Peace Song for December 21st is “Sailing Down This Golden River” by Pete Seeger. You can find the lyrics in the Rise Up Singing songbook on page 235. On this shortest day of the year, it is nice to think of floating down a golden river on a warm, sunny day.
