Time Has Come Today: Peace Song 11/18

Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers is the Peace Song of the Day for 11/18.  Today’s selection was inspired by Delphine Blue playing it on her Shocking Blue radio show today in honor of #N17.   Delphine play the whole amazing 11 minute version.  The 2 minute version is the only live one I could find.

Dorothy Day’s Christian Pacifist Stand against US entry into WWII

The Power of Nonviolence Writings by Advocates of PeaceThe ninth chapter of The Power of Nonviolence: Writings by Advocates of Peace contains Dorothy Days short 1942 essay Our Country Passes from Undeclared War to Declared War; We continue our Christian Pacifist Stand. This essay is the sequel to last week’s pre-WWII essay Pacifism.

From its title onward, the essay is directed to a Christian audience as it opens with “Dear fellow workers in Christ”  The prior essay quoted the Pope.  This essay quotes a priest named Father Orchard for 5 paragraphs.

This essay seems to refer to Christian imagery more to reassure Day herself of the righteous of her non-collaboration with the war efforts than to convince her audience.  It is clear from the essay that Day’s work has suffered greatly from her pacifist stand in the face of overwhelming US support for entering the war: Continue reading Dorothy Day’s Christian Pacifist Stand against US entry into WWII

Today, Occupy Wall Street held demonstrations throughout New York City. Reports are that 30,000 plus people participated.

One of the exciting, creative, nonviolent moments was when occupiers projected a huge, light show onto the nearby Verizon Building, to the delight of fellow marchers on the Brooklyn Bridge. What a great moment for the 99%.

“Stand” by R.E.M. is the Peace Song of the Day for November 15th. The Duke and Duchess of Peace would like to dedicate this song to the folks occupying Liberty Square in NYC. Last night, they lost a lot of supplies, and thousands of books, because the city and the police tried to stop them from redressing their government.

Support and strength to Occupy Wall Street to stand firm at Liberty Square. Support and strength to all the occupiers, who are nobly using nonviolent action to promote democracy and social justice.

Thursday, November 17th is an International Day of Action. Folks in New York City will be trying to occupy the whole city and the subways.

Occupy Congress in 2012

occupy congress 3This lesson from 2011 has been that we must reach beyond our comfort zones and participate directly in democracy.  Now that the 2011 elections are over, let’s talk about the 2012 elections where all of the House of Representatives and a 1/3 of the US Senate are up for re-election.

We have talked about how Congress is currently occupied by corporations It’s time to take it back.  Congress needs to by occupied by real people.  Congress needs to be occupied by YOU!!

I am not talking about bring a sleeping bag or tent to your local Congressional office.  You must think of a more permanent occupation.  Sitting behind the desk that says Representative (or Senator) for a full term.  Imagine the changes you can make as a representative of the 99%.   Continue reading Occupy Congress in 2012

A change in the programmed entertainment at last night’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gala left a few world leaders slack-jawed, though most seemed not to notice that anything was amiss.

During the gala dinner, renowned Hawaiian guitarist Makana, who performed at the White House in 2009, opened his suit jacket to reveal a home-made “Occupy with Aloha” T-shirt. Then, instead of playing the expected instrumental background music, he spent almost 45 minutes repeatedly singing his protest ballad released earlier that day. The ballad, called “We Are the Many,” includes lines such as “The lobbyists at Washington do gnaw…. And until they are purged, we won’t withdraw,” and ends with the refrain: “We’ll occupy the streets, we’ll occupy the courts, we’ll occupy the offices of you, till you do the bidding of the many, not the few.”  Continue reading APEC World Leaders Hear Hawaiian Occupy Song: Peace Song for 11/13
