Poor Boy Blues: Peace Song for January 8, 2012

[Today at Peace Couple we are going to do some serious catching up on Peace Song of the Day. We won’t tweet them all. But, if you check back tonight, you will find a long list of songs that celebrate peace and justice in the spirit of nonviolence!]

The Peace Song of the Day for January 8th is “Poor Boy Blues” [aka “Poor Boy A Long Way From Home”]. It is a traditional song with many variations, and many artists who have covered it. We are going to feature the video and lyrics with Mississippi John Hurt. There is also a rockin’ version with Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler at Youtube: here.

“Drums of War” by Sonny Meadows is the Peace Song of the Day for December 11th. You can find this song on the album Bibles, Guns & Flags. In the liner notes, Sonny Meadows comments on his inspiration for this song:

Written in response to Kosovo and my own personal experiences in Viet Nam, but applies to the Mid-East, Africa and everywhere we let vengeance take the place of common sense.

“Hangin’ In The High School Hall” by Sonny Meadows is the Peace Song of the Day for December 7th.

You can find this song on two different albums: How Does A Patriot Act (Sonny Meadows) and I Never Thought I’d Miss Richard Nixon (Blacklisted & The Banned, with Sonny Meadows, Bob Campbell, Jon Foreman, Bob Westcott, and Robert Langley).

End the wars — Keep Johnny home! Peace Song for 11/20/2011

“Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya” is the Peace Song of the Day for Sunday, November 20th. It is an old Irish tune, that is very anti-war. You can find the lyrics to this song in the Rise Up Singing songbook, on page 161.

Ironically, an American composer used the Irish song as the basis for “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again”, which became a Civil War tune, to long for and welcome back soldiers. The words to “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again” are not pointedly political. Though, it has been used as a patriotic tune, and a tribute to veterans. So, the two songs are very different. And, the boldest, most antiwar version came first.
