Worried Occupation Blues: Peace Song for 11/27/2011

Worried Occupation Blues is the Peace Song of the Day for Sunday, November 27, 2011. This song is based on the traditional song, Worried Man Blues. Kimberly added new lyrics. Then, Kimberly and Ian sang it on Youtube as a kind of teaching tape. We are hoping that some more polished singers will pick up the idea, and maybe make their own videos.

You can get anything you want: Peace Song for 11/26/2011

Update: Saw Arlo Guthrie and family perform at Carnegie Hall tonight (11/26/2011). He mentioned his support for the occupy movement. Talked about marching to the Occupy Wall Street concert with Pete Seeger. And, spoke strongly about the need for unions. He performed “All Over The World”, with a mention of occupation.

Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie is the Peace Song of the Day for November 26th. It’s not the kind of song most folks memorize and sing at demonstrations. But, it is a great diatribe against war. And, the chorus is catchy…”You can get, anything you want, at Alice’s Restaurant…”

Here’s a link, if you want to sing along: Youtube of Alice’s Restaurant: here.

The Duke and Duchess will be making their annual pilgrimage to Carnegie Hall tonight. Arlo performs at Carnegie Hall the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. The show is an extension of the Carnegie Hall shows that the Weaver used to do.

Most years, in addition to beautiful music, and hippie bonding, something exciting happens. Sometimes Pete Seeger shows up. Other times, there will be a timely and profound political reference, such as to acknowledge the injustices to immigrants on Long Island. We will give a report back, with this year’s highlights and surprises.

(And, of course, the answer to the big question…Will Arlo or will Arlo not play “Alice’s Restaurant” at Carnegie Hall this year? My guess: YES. And, I think he will add a reference to the occupations.)

Please feel free to add your review or thoughts in the comment section to this post. (We review and filter the comments about once a day).

Buy Nothing Day: Black Friday 11/25/2011

Archival Image: Buy Nothing Day 2006

Well, here, we are, a shopping site, telling you not to shop. Though, it is only for one day a year. We feel pretty sure you could just wait and buy it tomorrow or the next day. And, low sales figures for Friday, November 25th, will make the big stores and the 1% rethink how they sell to consumers, and exploit labor. (And, low sales figures on this one day might also cause prices to lower in time for the winter holidays!)

Peace Couple promotes compassionate shopping. That means standing up for people forced to work late Thanksgiving, or all hours of the day on Friday, because the greedy corporations that employ them are trying to rake in more cash.

So, please consider buying nothing today. But, if you do buy something, please buy it from a small business and/or union business.

Here are some thoughts from the folks at Adbusters: Continue reading Buy Nothing Day: Black Friday 11/25/2011

Brooklyn Bridge Video: “Occupy Wall Street/Occupy Earth” Light Show

Today, Occupy Wall Street held demonstrations throughout New York City. Reports are that 30,000 plus people participated.

One of the exciting, creative, nonviolent moments was when occupiers projected a huge, light show onto the nearby Verizon Building, to the delight of fellow marchers on the Brooklyn Bridge. What a great moment for the 99%.

Below is video of the light show:

Stand in the place where you are: Peace Song for 11/15/2011

“Stand” by R.E.M. is the Peace Song of the Day for November 15th. The Duke and Duchess of Peace would like to dedicate this song to the folks occupying Liberty Square in NYC. Last night, they lost a lot of supplies, and thousands of books, because the city and the police tried to stop them from redressing their government.

Support and strength to Occupy Wall Street to stand firm at Liberty Square. Support and strength to all the occupiers, who are nobly using nonviolent action to promote democracy and social justice.

Thursday, November 17th is an International Day of Action. Folks in New York City will be trying to occupy the whole city and the subways.
