Peace Song for 11/1/2011 (That was yesterday!)

“There But For Fortune” by Phil Ochs is the Peace Song of the Day for November 1, 2011. Yes…I am posting this the next day, because I was recalcitrant and did not post yesterday! You can find this song on page 186 of the Rise Up Singing songbook.

This song is dedicated to the community at Liberty Square, who are dealing with an influx of homeless people and other people from the community who need support. This will be a trying time for Occupy Wall Street. Hope they will handle it with compassion and grace.

“Sweet Cherry Wine” by Tommy James & The Shondells, is the Peace Song of the Day for October 31th.  I have come to appreciate Tommy James  mixture of pop and mesage more.  It’s not enough to just oppose things.  We need to stand for something.  Listen to the 1st stanza.

“We Are Spirits In The Material World” by Sting/The Police is the Peace Song of the Day for October 29th. This song is dedicated to the Occupy Wall Street folks at Liberty Square this evening: May their spirits be stronger than the material of snow, sleet, and hail! Stay strong and warm!

Deep Blue Sea: Peace Song for 10/28/2011

“Deep Blue Sea” is the Peace Song of the Day for Friday, October 28th.

The music for “Deep Blue Sea” is traditional. I first learned this song from a Sweet Honey In The Rock tape I used to listen to over and over again. Though, you can also find a really cool version of the song, that emphasizes peace, in my favorite, campfire songbook, Rise Up Singing. Those lyrics, with explicit antiwar sentiments, are by John Bell. The video below is with The Weavers.

Freedom is a notion sweeping the nation: Peace Song for 10/26/2011

“Freedom“, from the Broadway musical, “Shenandoah“, is the Peace Song of the Day for October 26th.

The Duke and Duchess of Peace would like to dedicate this song to the brave folks at Occupy Oakland. Last night, various police entities attacked the freedom of Oakland – and all of us – by using weapons against Americans exercising their right to Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly.
