“If I Had A Hammer” is the Royal Song of the Day for today. You can find this song on page 215 of Rise Up Singing.

I chose this song to continue the idea that singing out will keep us cool. Also, because it has such bold images and patterns, I think it would be a great song to make new lyrics for.

So, this week, while the temps in New York (and elsewhere) are in the 90’s, I am going to sing…

“If I had a ceiling fan, I’d spin it in the morning…”

“If I had an ice pool, I’d go swimming in the evening…”

Meanwhile, the real lyrics remind us to be bold: Speak up and sing out for peace and justice. “I’d hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land”.

Here is a video of Peter, Paul and Mary performing this song, first written by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger:

A previously unreleased, full length 2-CD concert set of quintessential Seeger – topical, traditional, whimsical, wise and joyous
