Pumpkin Pie: Peace Song for Thanksgiving Day, Nov 24, 2011

The Christians and the Pagans” by Dar Williams is the Peace Song of the Day for Thanksgiving, November 24th. (Don’t worry! It’s a funny song. And, the Christians and Pagans get along, eventually…)

More about why this is a peace song:

The Christians and The Pagans:
A Song About Peace and Nonviolent Communication

The deep reasons for choosing this song: It is about a family sitting down to a holiday (Christmas) dinner, and the intricacies of their harmony, disharmony, and communication. It is about the difficulty and satisfaction of achieving peace at home. And, it is about tolerance for people’s cultural and religious differences.

The lighter reasons for choosing this song: Dar Williams’ beautiful voice and interesting ideas add warmth to the chilly season. This song has the best line ever written about pumpkin pie. And, this song practically invented a new vocabulary word by being so descriptive. When one of the characters is upset, and tries to use an excuse to leave the dinner conversation, the lyrics say, “…she hit the kitchen”. That is just a wonderful observation of domestic life.

Happy Thanksgiving to our Peace Couple readers. Hope you have a wonderful day with family and/or friends. Remember to stay with peace and nonviolent communication. And, if that does not work, remember you can always hit the kitchen.

The Christians and the Pagans
(excerpt from lyrics)
*
So the Christians and the pagans
Sat together at the table
Finding faith and common ground
The best that they were able
*
And where does magic come from?
I think magic’s in the learning
‘Cause now when Christians sit with pagans
Only pumpkin pies are burning…
